The usual starter at right tackle, Don Barclay, didn’t practice all week with a knee injury and probably will need to use a brace if he plays. It looks as if Newhouse is going to have to fill in on the line. Advantage, Tuck, who calls himself “Mr. Almost’’ because of all the big plays he feels he’s almost made. Newhouse started at left tackle the past two seasons. He allowed two fourth-quarter sacks two weeks ago in a loss to the Bears.

Packers receiver Jordy Nelson admitted what’s happened the past two weeks is “a little bit of a shock to the system.’’ Losing Rodgers to a fractured left collarbone early in what became a loss to the Bears was disturbing enough, then last week, in a loss to the Eagles, the Packers lost Rodgers’ replacement, Seneca Wallace, to a groin injury on the first series.

 

“It makes it a little hectic,’’ Nelson said.

 

No kidding. Rodgers’ absence completely changes the complexion of any game. Scott Tolzien, the No. 3 quarterback, makes his first start of any kind since he led the charge for Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl. Rushed in as an emergency replacement, Tolzien wasn’t terrible in his NFL debut, completing 24 of 39 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

 

“He’s a very confident kid,’’ Nelson said. “He’s a smart kid. I expect him to do well, probably a little bit better now that he’s had a week of practice with us and knowing that he’s going to be the starter that we’ll be game planning for his skills.’’

The Grinder

 

The Packers with Rodgers always were considered a pass-first- and pass-second offense, at times not even trying to establish anything on the ground. That is why it is astounding to see the Packers since Week 3 sitting at No. 4 in the NFL in rushing, averaging 155.1 yards per game. It’s a shift that took place before Rodgers got hurt, and it has been fueled by rookie Eddie Lacy, the former Alabama pounder who has an NFL-high 618 rushing yards over the past six games, including a 150-yard game in a loss to the Bears.

 

“I love the way he runs. He runs hard, he runs with conviction, plays with passion, big, fast guy,’’ linebacker Jon Beason said. “We’re going to have our hands full. You look at what he did against Chicago and you say, ‘OK, this guy’s for real.’ So bring your big-boy pads and embrace the challenge.’’

Size Matters

 

Figure cornerback Prince Amukamara will get the bulk of the work against Nelson, at 6-foot-3 a good-sized target and Green Bay’s most prolific receiver. That leaves Trumaine McBride on James Jones, who last season led the league in touchdown catches with 14. Jones missed two games with a knee injury but returned last week. The 6-foot-1 Jones will have a height advantage against McBride (barely 5-9) but who doesn’t? McBride, 28, kicked around with the Bears, Cardinals and Jaguars and has been competitive filling in for injured Corey Webster.

 

“A lot of guys look at me and I look young, they think I’m a rookie or this is my second year,’’ McBride said. “Most guys don’t know my background or don’t know where I’ve been or how long I’ve been in the league. Guys now still probably don’t know that I’m not young.’’

With all the attention on Jason Pierre-Paul’s hurting shoulder and Tuck’s resurgence, defensive tackle Linval Joseph continues to produce, quietly, and the Giants have a big decision to make on him following the season. Joseph is on the last year of his contract and will attract lucrative offers. He is a key ingredient in the improved run defense and could be a big factor vs. the Packers.

 

“Linval plays good against teams in green,’’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. “I don’t know why. You go back to ’11 and he played good against Green Bay. He played good against them last year. He played good against Philly. Maybe it’s just the teams in green he kind of steps it up a little bit.’’

THE BREAKDOWN: FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

 

‘Scoots’ time:  Alex Van Pelt has been there. As Jim Kelly’s backup with the Buffalo Bills in the 1990s, Van Pelt remembers what it’s like to go from clipboard-holder to signal-caller in a matter of seconds. He remembers it happening “two or three times,” and, well, it wasn’t always pretty.

“There’s a definite curve. You’d like to think you’re going to go in and maintain the level of play the starter had usually doesn’t happen when you come off the bench,” the Packers running backs coach recalled. “You do your best, but with a week of preparation going into the next week you feel more confident in calling plays, getting in and out of the huddle, all of the adjustments, all the routes you’ve thrown that week. You just feel a lot more comfortable.”

 

That’s why Van Pelt liked what he saw from No. 3 quarterback Scott Tolzien against Philadelphia a week ago. Although he threw two costly interceptions, including one in the end zone that took points off the board, Tolzien had command of the huddle and never looked overwhelmed after veteran backup Seneca Wallace, getting his first start in place of an injured Rodgers, went out after the first series. Against Chicago the previous week, the 10-year vet had struggled off the bench.

 

“I was impressed. I thought he handled himself extremely well, made plays. (He) missed a couple of throws, but if we had a week of practice throwing that throw three or four times, he probably hits it,” Van Pelt said. “That’s some of the curve I’m talking about. All the reports I got from my guys was very impressive, he took charge, he was a leader, things you expect from a guy coming in off the bench.”

 

Now, Tolzien will make his first NFL start, and unlike the previous week with Wallace, there was a palpable feeling of confidence in the Packers’ locker room. Rather than paying lipservice to the idea of the backup QB having their faith, the players seemed to be giving off a genuine vibe of Scott can do this. Or, if you prefer, “Scoots,” as Rodgers nicknamed him. (“It’s Aaron Rodgers,” Tolzien replied when asked how he felt about the nickname. “He’s the boss. What am I going to say?”)

 

Tolzien spent extra time throughout the week with quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, offensive coordinator Tom Clements, Rodgers, and of course McCarthy, who met with him on Tuesday and again on Thursday to talk about play-calls he might prefer.

 

“He’s getting a lot of coaching, I can tell you that,” McCarthy joked. “It’s time for him to just settle down and go play football. He’s a very even-keeled young man, absorbs everything, but I think it’s like anything, when your opportunity comes, you need to just play football the way he’s always played.“He just needs to go out and play the quarterback position. We’re not worried about him. Everybody needs to go out and do their job and do it at a better level than we did last week. That’s our focus.”11 (1)One way to help Tolzien: A successful running game, which went from dominant against Chicago (29 attempts, 199 total yards) to the opposite (30 carries, 99 yards) against the Eagles.

 

“Obviously for him to stay ahead of schedule with the chains, keep him out of those situations where he’s got to push the ball down the field with third-and-long, keeping an edge in down and distance, having some success in the run game (can help),” Van Pelt said. “He can use the play-action pass game and the fake game to help him, open up guys. We’re going at it the same mentality – we want to be effective in the run regardless of who’s playing quarterback – but those are some of the areas that might help.

 

“I just thought we left a lot of yards on the field (against Philadelphia). I thought we ran the ball, and not all of it, but we weren’t decisive enough with our cuts and didn’t have enough forward lean with our pad level, which we talked about this week. There was definitely more yards out there than we got last Sunday”

 

Lining up:   Another challenge for Tolzien: Possibly more musical chairs on the offensive line, which in consecutive weeks has watched at least one starter head to the sideline and not return. Two weeks ago, right guard T.J. Lang left with a concussion, leaving Wallace to battle the Bears with Barclay at right guard and Marshall Newhouse at right tackle. Packers receiver Jordy Nelson admitted what’s happened the past two weeks is “a little bit of a shock to the system.’’ Losing Rodgers to a fractured left collarbone early in what became a loss to the Bears was disturbing enough, then last week, in a loss to the Eagles, the Packers lost Rodgers’ replacement, Seneca Wallace, to a groin injury on the first series.

 

“It makes it a little hectic,’’ Nelson said.

 

No kidding. Rodgers’ absence completely changes the complexion of any game. Scott Tolzien, the No. 3 quarterback, makes his first start of any kind since he led the charge for Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl. Rushed in as an emergency replacement, Tolzien wasn’t terrible in his NFL debut, completing 24 of 39 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

 

“He’s a very confident kid,’’ Nelson said. “He’s a smart kid. I expect him to do well, probably a little bit better now that he’s had a week of practice with us and knowing that he’s going to be the starter that we’ll be game planning for his skills.’’

The Packers with Rodgers always were considered a pass-first- and pass-second offense, at times not even trying to establish anything on the ground. That is why it is astounding to see the Packers since Week 3 sitting at No. 4 in the NFL in rushing, averaging 155.1 yards per game. It’s a shift that took place before Rodgers got hurt, and it has been fueled by rookie Eddie Lacy, the former Alabama pounder who has an NFL-high 618 rushing yards over the past six games, including a 150-yard game in a loss to the Bears.

 

“I love the way he runs. He runs hard, he runs with conviction, plays with passion, big, fast guy,’’ linebacker Jon Beason said. “We’re going to have our hands full. You look at what he did against Chicago and you say, ‘OK, this guy’s for real.’ So bring your big-boy pads and embrace the challenge.’’

Size Matters

 

Figure cornerback Prince Amukamara will get the bulk of the work against Nelson, at 6-foot-3 a good-sized target and Green Bay’s most prolific receiver. That leaves Trumaine McBride on James Jones, who last season led the league in touchdown catches with 14. Jones missed two games with a knee injury but returned last week. The 6-foot-1 Jones will have a height advantage against McBride (barely 5-9) but who doesn’t? McBride, 28, kicked around with the Bears, Cardinals and Jaguars and has been competitive filling in for injured Corey Webster.

 

“A lot of guys look at me and I look young, they think I’m a rookie or this is my second year,’’ McBride said. “Most guys don’t know my background or don’t know where I’ve been or how long I’ve been in the league. Guys now still probably don’t know that I’m not young.’’

With all the attention on Jason Pierre-Paul’s hurting shoulder and Tuck’s resurgence, defensive tackle Linval Joseph continues to produce, quietly, and the Giants have a big decision to make on him following the season. Joseph is on the last year of his contract and will attract lucrative offers. He is a key ingredient in the improved run defense and could be a big factor vs. the Packers.

 

“Linval plays good against teams in green,’’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. “I don’t know why. You go back to ’11 and he played good against Green Bay. He played good against them last year. He played good against Philly. Maybe it’s just the teams in green he kind of steps it up a little bit.’’

THE BREAKDOWN: FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

 

‘Scoots’ time:  Alex Van Pelt has been there. As Jim Kelly’s backup with the Buffalo Bills in the 1990s, Van Pelt remembers what it’s like to go from clipboard-holder to signal-caller in a matter of seconds. He remembers it happening “two or three times,” and, well, it wasn’t always pretty.

“There’s a definite curve. You’d like to think you’re going to go in and maintain the level of play the starter had usually doesn’t happen when you come off the bench,” the Packers running backs coach recalled. “You do your best, but with a week of preparation going into the next week you feel more confident in calling plays, getting in and out of the huddle, all of the adjustments, all the routes you’ve thrown that week. That’s why Van Pelt liked what he saw from No. 3 quarterback Scott Tolzien against Philadelphia a week ago. Although he threw two costly interceptions, including one in the end zone that took points off the board, Tolzien had command of the huddle and never looked overwhelmed after veteran backup Seneca Wallace, getting his first start in place of an injured Rodgers, went out after the first series. Against Chicago the previous week, the 10-year vet had struggled off the bench.

 

“I was impressed. I thought he handled himself extremely well, made plays. (He) missed a couple of throws, but if we had a week of practice throwing that throw three or four times, he probably hits it,” Van Pelt said. “That’s some of the curve I’m talking about. All the reports I got from my guys was very impressive, he took charge, he was a leader, things you expect from a guy coming in off the bench.”

 

Now, Tolzien will make his first NFL start, and unlike the previous week with Wallace, there was a palpable feeling of confidence in the Packers’ locker room. Rather than paying lipservice to the idea of the backup QB having their faith, the players seemed to be giving off a genuine vibe of Scott can do this. Or, if you prefer, “Scoots,” as Rodgers nicknamed him. (“It’s Aaron Rodgers,” Tolzien replied when asked how he felt about the nickname. “He’s the boss. What am I going to say?”)

 

Tolzien spent extra time throughout the week with quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, offensive coordinator Tom Clements, Rodgers, and of course McCarthy, who met with him on Tuesday and again on Thursday to talk about play-calls he might prefer.

 

“He’s getting a lot of coaching, I can tell you that,” McCarthy joked. “It’s time for him to just settle down and go play football. He’s a very even-keeled young man, absorbs everything, but I think it’s like anything, when your opportunity comes, you need to just play football the way he’s always played.“He just needs to go out and play the quarterback position. We’re not worried about him. Everybody needs to go out and do their job and do it at a better level than we did last week. That’s our focus.”11 (1)One way to help Tolzien: A successful running game, which went from dominant against Chicago (29 attempts, 199 total yards) to the opposite (30 carries, 99 yards) against the Eagles.

 

“Obviously for him to stay ahead of schedule with the chains, keep him out of those situations where he’s got to push the ball down the field with third-and-long, keeping an edge in down and distance, having some success in the run game (can help),” Van Pelt said. “He can use the play-action pass game and the fake game to help him, open up guys. We’re going at it the same mentality – we want to be effective in the run regardless of who’s playing quarterback – but those are some of the areas that might help.

 

“I just thought we left a lot of yards on the field (against Philadelphia). I thought we ran the ball, and not all of it, but we weren’t decisive enough with our cuts and didn’t have enough forward lean with our pad level, which we talked about this week. There was definitely more yards out there than we got last Sunday”

 

Lining up:   Another challenge for Tolzien: Possibly more musical chairs on the offensive line, which in consecutive weeks has watched at least one starter head to the sideline and not return. Two weeks ago, right guard T.J. Lang left with a concussion, leaving Wallace to battle the Bears with Barclay at right guard and Marshall Newhouse at right tackle. The usual starter at right tackle, Don Barclay, didn’t practice all week with a knee injury and probably will need to use a brace if he plays. It looks as if Newhouse is going to have to fill in on the line. Advantage, Tuck, who calls himself “Mr. Almost’’ because of all the big plays he feels he’s almost made. Newhouse started at left tackle the past two seasons. He allowed two fourth-quarter sacks two weeks ago in a loss to the Bears.

System Crash

Packers receiver Jordy Nelson admitted what’s happened the past two weeks is “a little bit of a shock to the system.’’ Losing Rodgers to a fractured left collarbone early in what became a loss to the Bears was disturbing enough, then last week, in a loss to the Eagles, the Packers lost Rodgers’ replacement, Seneca Wallace, to a groin injury on the first series.

“It makes it a little hectic,’’ Nelson said.

No kidding. Rodgers’ absence completely changes the complexion of any game. Scott Tolzien, the No. 3 quarterback, makes his first start of any kind since he led the charge for Wisconsin in the 2011 Rose Bowl. Rushed in as an emergency replacement, Tolzien wasn’t terrible in his NFL debut, completing 24 of 39 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

“He’s a very confident kid,’’ Nelson said. “He’s a smart kid. I expect him to do well, probably a little bit better now that he’s had a week of practice with us and knowing that he’s going to be the starter that we’ll be game planning for his skills.’’

The Grinder

The Packers with Rodgers always were considered a pass-first- and pass-second offense, at times not even trying to establish anything on the ground. That is why it is astounding to see the Packers since Week 3 sitting at No. 4 in the NFL in rushing, averaging 155.1 yards per game. It’s a shift that took place before Rodgers got hurt, and it has been fueled by rookie Eddie Lacy, the former Alabama pounder who has an NFL-high 618 rushing yards over the past six games, including a 150-yard game in a loss to the Bears.

“I love the way he runs. He runs hard, he runs with conviction, plays with passion, big, fast guy,’’ linebacker Jon Beason said. “We’re going to have our hands full. You look at what he did against Chicago and you say, ‘OK, this guy’s for real.’ So bring your big-boy pads and embrace the challenge.’’

Size Matters

Figure cornerback Prince Amukamara will get the bulk of the work against Nelson, at 6-foot-3 a good-sized target and Green Bay’s most prolific receiver. That leaves Trumaine McBride on James Jones, who last season led the league in touchdown catches with 14. Jones missed two games with a knee injury but returned last week. The 6-foot-1 Jones will have a height advantage against McBride (barely 5-9) but who doesn’t? McBride, 28, kicked around with the Bears, Cardinals and Jaguars and has been competitive filling in for injured Corey Webster.

“A lot of guys look at me and I look young, they think I’m a rookie or this is my second year,’’ McBride said. “Most guys don’t know my background or don’t know where I’ve been or how long I’ve been in the league. Guys now still probably don’t know that I’m not young.’’

The Color of Money

With all the attention on Jason Pierre-Paul’s hurting shoulder and Tuck’s resurgence, defensive tackle Linval Joseph continues to produce, quietly, and the Giants have a big decision to make on him following the season. Joseph is on the last year of his contract and will attract lucrative offers. He is a key ingredient in the improved run defense and could be a big factor vs. the Packers.

“Linval plays good against teams in green,’’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. “I don’t know why. You go back to ’11 and he played good against Green Bay. He played good against them last year. He played good against Philly. Maybe it’s just the teams in green he kind of steps it up a little bit.’’

At another time, the Eli Manning vs. Scott Tolzien matchup would be judged a knockout for the Giants, but now, who knows? The Packers are a well-coached team and figure to rally around their young QB, plus they have the ground game to keep the Giants off-balance. Special teams follies don’t help the home team, but an improved running game does.

THE BREAKDOWN: FIVE THINGS TO WATCH

‘Scoots’ time:  Alex Van Pelt has been there. As Jim Kelly’s backup with the Buffalo Bills in the 1990s, Van Pelt remembers what it’s like to go from clipboard-holder to signal-caller in a matter of seconds. He remembers it happening “two or three times,” and, well, it wasn’t always pretty.

“There’s a definite curve. You’d like to think you’re going to go in and maintain the level of play the starter had usually doesn’t happen when you come off the bench,” the Packers running backs coach recalled. “You do your best, but with a week of preparation going into the next week you feel more confident in calling plays, getting in and out of the huddle, all of the adjustments, all the routes you’ve thrown that week. That’s why Van Pelt liked what he saw from No. 3 quarterback Scott Tolzien against Philadelphia a week ago. Although he threw two costly interceptions, including one in the end zone that took points off the board, Tolzien had command of the huddle and never looked overwhelmed after veteran backup Seneca Wallace, getting his first start in place of an injured Rodgers, went out after the first series. Against Chicago the previous week, the 10-year vet had struggled off the bench.

“I was impressed. I thought he handled himself extremely well, made plays. (He) missed a couple of throws, but if we had a week of practice throwing that throw three or four times, he probably hits it,” Van Pelt said. “That’s some of the curve I’m talking about. All the reports I got from my guys was very impressive, he took charge, he was a leader, things you expect from a guy coming in off the bench.”

Now, Tolzien will make his first NFL start, and unlike the previous week with Wallace, there was a palpable feeling of confidence in the Packers’ locker room. Rather than paying lipservice to the idea of the backup QB having their faith, the players seemed to be giving off a genuine vibe of Scott can do this. Or, if you prefer, “Scoots,” as Rodgers nicknamed him. (“It’s Aaron Rodgers,” Tolzien replied when asked how he felt about the nickname. “He’s the boss. What am I going to say?”)

Tolzien spent extra time throughout the week with quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, offensive coordinator Tom Clements, Rodgers, and of course McCarthy, who met with him on Tuesday and again on Thursday to talk about play-calls he might prefer.

“He’s getting a lot of coaching, I can tell you that,” McCarthy joked. “It’s time for him to just settle down and go play football. He’s a very even-keeled young man, absorbs everything, but I think it’s like anything, when your opportunity comes, you need to just play football the way he’s always played.“He just needs to go out and play the quarterback position. We’re not worried about him. Everybody needs to go out and do their job and do it at a better level than we did last week. That’s our focus.”11 (1)One way to help Tolzien: A successful running game, which went from dominant against Chicago (29 attempts, 199 total yards) to the opposite (30 carries, 99 yards) against the Eagles.

“Obviously for him to stay ahead of schedule with the chains, keep him out of those situations where he’s got to push the ball down the field with third-and-long, keeping an edge in down and distance, having some success in the run game (can help),” Van Pelt said. “He can use the play-action pass game and the fake game to help him, open up guys. We’re going at it the same mentality – we want to be effective in the run regardless of who’s playing quarterback – but those are some of the areas that might help.

“I just thought we left a lot of yards on the field (against Philadelphia). I thought we ran the ball, and not all of it, but we weren’t decisive enough with our cuts and didn’t have enough forward lean with our pad level, which we talked about this week. There was definitely more yards out there than we got last Sunday”

Lining up:   Another challenge for Tolzien: Possibly more musical chairs on the offensive line, which in consecutive weeks has watched at least one starter head to the sideline and not return. Two weeks ago, right guard T.J. Lang left with a concussion, leaving Wallace to battle the Bears with Barclay at right guard and Marshall Newhouse at right tackle.
